Kazakhstan: School for Young Media and Information Literacy Trainers in Action

New approaches to teaching media and information literacy are being tested at School No. 5 in Almaty with the active participation of teachers, students and parents.

Schools are adopting practical methods to teach media and information literacy, exploring the impact of artificial intelligence. The goal is to help students think critically, especially when dealing with fake news and misinformation. They鈥檙e uniting students, teachers, parents, and media trainers to develop practical media literacy skills. 

This initiative recognizes the importance of critical literacy in the digital age, going beyond traditional definitions. Media and Information Literacy (MIL) equips individuals to navigate the complex landscape of information, media, and technology, both inside and outside the classroom. It encompasses competencies related to information literacy, media literacy, and digital literacy. 

Organizers

Almaty City Education Department of the City Scientific and Methodological Centre for New Technologies in Education of Almaty. International Centre for the Rapprochement of Cultures under the auspices of UNESCO (category 2) and UNESCO Almaty Office.

Expert organizations

Experts on media literacy, developers of local MIL teaching resources and MIL game, representative of factcheck platforms from and members from CSOs, as well as Kazakhstani children's media outlets and representatives of technological campaigns took place in the training sessions. 

Agenda

The seminar covered various aspects of media and information literacy (MIL). It commenced with warm greetings from the school director, followed by an programmatic introduction by the regional UNESCO Office. Participants engaged in discussions about the importance of MIL in Almaty schools, with a focus on media literacy鈥檚 role in evaluating reliable information. Recent MIL resources were introduced, drawing insights from a media school鈥檚 practical work in Tajikistan. The seminar explored partnerships with the children鈥檚 newspaper, emphasized internet safety, and discussed game-based teaching methods for MIL. An interactive quest related to MIL actively engaged participants, and the impact of AI on teaching media literacy was thoughtfully examined. The seminar concluded with reflections on key takeaways, leaving participants better equipped to navigate the dynamic landscape of media literacy.
