Irina Bokova congratulates Michaëlle Jean for her election to head the International Organisation of La Francophonie

Paris, 30 November—“I congratulate the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean for her election to head the International Organisation of La Francophonie. The election of a woman is excellent news and a strong symbol on the occasion of the summit of La Francophonie, dedicated this year to the role of women and youth as vectors of peace and actors of development ,” declared the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova.

“The impact of Michaëlle Jean’s action as UNESCO’s Special Envoy for Haiti over the last four years has been exemplary in its dynamism and modern vision of multilateralism. I believe this election promises to reinforce even further the partnership between UNESCO and La Francophonie, pursuing the work of the great Abdou Diouf,” Ms Bokova added.  

The Director-General took part in the 15th summit of La Francophonie, held in Dakar (Senegal), where she represented the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon
