Earthquakes have struck the globe time and again, reminding us of nature’s immense power and the vulnerabilities of both people and man-made structures. The February 2023 Türkiye-Syria earthquake reduced cities to rubble, leaving communities devastated by loss. Just months later, a massive 6.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Morocco’s Al Haouz region in September, claiming 2,901 lives, injuring 5,530, and reducing over 30 historic sites to debris. This year’s Noto Peninsula earthquake in Japan was yet another blow—not only to communities and infrastructure but also to cultural heritage, damaging historical buildings and castle ruins.

This growing urgency calls us to reconsider our earthquake preparedness, particularly in culturally rich regions where the stakes are even higher. In response, the International Platform for Reducing Earthquake Disasters (IPRED) will hold its 13th Annual Meeting and International Conference in Cairo, Egypt, a country deeply rooted in history and monumental architecture. Experts from around the world will gather to discuss how knowledge in seismology and earthquake engineering can be transformed into actionable strategies for disaster risk reduction. For the first time, this meeting will also spotlight cultural heritage risk mitigation, exploring advanced technologies and innovative methodologies.

Set in Cairo—a city where ancient temples, pyramids, and antiquities stand as legacies of thousands of years—this unique gathering will unite diverse voices toward a shared goal: reducing earthquake disaster impacts by creating a safer, more resilient built environment.
