International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust

On the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, UNESCO organizes a series of events on the 23 January to mark the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp.

27 January 2025 will mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi German concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. Over one million people were murdered in this vast complex alone, most of them Jews.

Marking this important anniversary and the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, UNESCO is organizing a series of activities on the 23 January, both centered around the historical site of Auschwitz-Birkenau as well as recalling the continued relevance to teach and learn about the Holocaust, globally. 

The events will include:

  • The Symposium As the witnesses fall silent: Young generations and the Holocaust, in cooperation with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, at 3 p.m. in Room IV 
  • A “Campus XL†welcoming around 300 students, featuring a projection of the new film La plus précieuse des marchandises in the presence of its producer Florence Gastaud. The session is organised in partnership with Mission du 80ème anniversaire des »åé²ú²¹°ù±ç³Ü±ð³¾±ð²Ô³Ù²õ, de la Libération de la France et de la Victoire, at 3.20 p.m. in Room XI (closed event)
  • Exhibitions: 
    • Beyond the Abyss by Olivier Mériel, photographer, in partnership with the Shoah Memorial on UNESCO's outside fences 
    • Timeless Treasures: The Jewish cultural legacy through the eyes of photographers, by Xavier Bourgois and Christophe Viseux, curators, opening at 5 p.m. in the Segur Hall 
  • Inauguration of artworks by Shelomo Selinger, artist and survivor, donated to UNESCO at 5.30 p.m. in the Segur Hall 
  • An official ceremony at 6.30 p.m. in Room I with
    • Audrey Azoulay, Director-General, UNESCO
    • Eric de Rothschild, President, Mémorial de la Shoah
    • Music by Wolfgang Holzmair & Olivier Godin, and Hagar Sharvit, mezzo-soprano
    • Ginette Kolinka, Holocaust survivor
    • Shelomo Selinger, Holocaust survivor and artist
