How communication can engage society in the preservation of the oceans is the theme of an unprecedented event in Brazil

will address cross-cutting issues to marine life, the relationship of the ocean to our daily lives and the fundamental role of communication in raising community awareness. The event will be held in Rio de Janeiro on 03 September 2019

The relationship between the ocean and society, and the way communication can engage people to understand this connection to protect marine ecosystems will be the conducting wires of Conexão Oceano. This is the first communication event for the Ocean Decade. The workshop is free and open to the public. It will be held at Museu do Amanhã (Tomorrow Museum), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) on 03 September 2019.

Targeting communicators, influencers, academics, researchers and society at large, the event aims at raising awareness and engage people over the importance of the oceans and bring the issue up, as the period between 2021 and 2030 has been declared by the United Nations (UN) as the Decade of Oceanic Science for Sustainable Development.

Conexão Oceano is jointly promoted by Fundação Grupo Boticário de Proteção à Natureza (Boticário Group Foundation for Nature Protection), UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), UNESCO in Brazil and Museu do Amanhã.

With a dynamic format, the workshop will feature discussion sessions called 'idea brunch' and 'speed talk' to tell stories of success that demonstrate the impact of the ocean on topics such as entrepreneurship, innovation, sport, and entertainment. Among the participants already confirmed to attend the event are the sailors Isabel Swan and Lars Grael; UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Oskar Metsavaht; the economist Vilfredo Schurmann; actress and show host Maria Paula Fidalgo; journalists Paulina Chamorro and Paula Saldanha; and surfer and businessman Rico de Souza.

“Oceans are part of our daily lives and are extremely important to the economy, science, welfare, environment, and health of the population. When we realize that all these activities are related to the seas, we understand the importance of mobilizing to protect and preserve marine ecosystems. In this process, communicators and influencers are strategic actors,” says the executive director of Fundação Grupo Boticário, Malu Nunes.

For UNESCO Director and Representative Marlova Jovchelovitch Noleto, “the event opens the activities of the , which aims at expanding international cooperation, promoting the preservation of the oceans and natural resources management. This is an essential theme for the sustainability of the planet, which is always relevant to Brazil, a country with a coastline of almost 7,500 kilometers.”
