Governance of Groundwater Resources in Transboundary Aquifers

In celebrating the 8th Africa Water Week, the UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa will be facilitating a Governance of Groundwater Resources in Transboundary Aquifers (GGRETA) session entitled 鈥淭owards improving groundwater governance in African transboundary aquifers鈥 on 24 November 2021 under the sub-theme 鈥淭ransboundary water management for cooperation and shared development鈥..  The GGRETA programme, which is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) seeks to strengthen regional stability, cooperation and peace through the establishment of cooperative frameworks for transboundary groundwater governance in River Basin Organizations (RBOs), Regional Commissions (RCs) and selected aquifers systems in Africa, Central America and Central Asia.

The public, academia, researchers, UN agencies, water professionals and other key stakeholders in the water and sanitation sector are all invited to share their opinions and comments on their understanding of the theme. The session aims at presenting recent progress in the management and governance of transboundary aquifers achieved in the context of 鈥淕overnance of Groundwater Resources in Transboundary Aquifers (GGRETA) phase 3 project. Specifically the session will present past and ongoing project contributions to the outcomes of institutional strengthening and cross-border cooperation with a basin approach, in cooperation with various partners in Africa. In addition the session creates a platform to exchange knowledge and solutions to address management and governance challenges in transboundary aquifers as well as to propose a way forward for scaling up in Africa the current and other methodologies foreseen under GGRETA.

The session will be opened by Mr Abou Amani, who is the Director of the Division of Water Sciences and Secretary of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP). Other speakers will make presentations on the recent progress and achievements made in the management and governance of transboundary aquifers under phase 3鈥 project  and these include Dr Mc LeBlanc from the University of Avignon,  Prof Piet Kenabatho from University of Botswana and Prof Jean-Marie Kileshye Onema, WaterNet.
