Global Citizenship Education (GCED) Reporting and Planning Workshop
and implementation strategies at the national level.
Background
In today's rapidly evolving global landscape, the urgency to cultivate inclusive societies and foster cultures of peace in the Caribbean has never been more critical. The region faces deep-rooted challenges, including entrenched social inequalities, widespread violence, and limited opportunities for economic and personal growth, especially among its youth. If left unaddressed, these issues threaten social cohesion and Caribbean nations' long-term stability and prosperity. In this context, Global Citizenship Education (GCED) stands out as a transformative approach, equipping individuals with the values, knowledge, and skills necessary to confront these pressing challenges. By empowering young people to become active, responsible global citizens, GCED offers a strategic pathway to reduce violence, bridge social divides, and unlock new opportunities for sustainable development, laying the foundation for a more peaceful, equitable, and resilient Caribbean future.
Since 2017, OREALC/UNESCO Santiago and the Asia Pacific Center for Education on International Understanding and Peace (APCEIU) have been working together to lead the GCED LAC Network. This network serves as a platform for sharing experiences and best practices, helping to strengthen efforts to promote Global Citizenship Education across the Latin America and Caribbean region. In response to these challenges, in collaboration with the UNESCO Office for the Caribbean, UNESCO Santiago commissioned an in-depth case study to assess the current status of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) integration in the Caribbean.
As part of UNESCO’s commitment to advancing SDG 4, notably Target 4.7, which aims to equip learners with the knowledge and skills necessary for promoting sustainable development, this effort marks a critical step in shaping the future of GCED across the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region, with a strong focus on the Caribbean.
