UNESCO and the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) are delighted to announce their upcoming convening of the ‘Regional Policy Dialogue and Launch of the Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights, and Sustainable Development’ for Asia-Pacific. The event will be held from 5 to 7 June 2024, in Bangkok.

Support for the Regional Policy Dialogue is provided by the Centres of Asia-Pacific Excellence (CAPEs), the New Zealand Centre for Global Studies, and Japan’s Sophia University. The Regional Policy Dialogue will be co-hosted by the Ministry of Education of Thailand.

This three-day event will gather government officials, policy-makers, educators, civil society representatives, and youth advocates to champion education which advances peace, human rights, and sustainable development.

Central to the Regional Policy Dialogue will be the Asia-Pacific launch of UNESCO’s ‘Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights, and Sustainable Development’, formally endorsed by all Member States during the UNESCO General Conference of late November 2023. The Recommendation was shaped through extensive consultations with a diverse set of stakeholders worldwide – from governments and teachers to informal educators and parents – to provide a comprehensive framework for all education stakeholders for integrating principles of peace, human rights, and sustainable development in education policies and practices.

Echoing the significance and guiding principles of the Recommendation, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay remarked on its 2023 adoption,

Today, when crises polarize our societies, when the multipolar world order continues to be the scene of violent conflicts, education must more than ever remain a defensive bulwark against the fractures of the world and a foundation for lasting peace.

Throughout the Regional Policy Dialogue in Bangkok, participants will gain further insights into the Recommendation, discuss the application of the Recommendation to the unique and widely diverse Asia-Pacific, and review how to most effectively collaborate to guide the development of a regional ‘roadmap’ aimed at embedding the Recommendation into national educational strategies, systems, and practices across the region – now called ‘home’ by over 60 per cent of the world’s population.

Reflecting the inclusive, whole-of-society approach of the Recommendation, as well as UNESCO’s own holistic approach to its education initiatives both regionally and globally, the Regional Policy Dialogue will feature interactive panel discussions which draw on a diverse range of experts from both educational and non-educational sectors, among the latter culture, the social and human sciences, and the communication and information sciences, to discuss the critical role of education in all settings and at all levels throughout life in fostering peace, global citizenship, human rights, and sustainable development. All attending participants will have ample opportunity to exchange insights, experiences, and best practices, thus laying the groundwork for enhanced cooperation and collective action.

As the world continues to grapple with complex global issues, the ‘Regional Policy Dialogue and Launch of the Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights, and Sustainable Development’ in Asia-Pacific will further underscore UNESCO's unwavering commitment to advancing education as a driving force for achieving lasting intercultural tolerance and peace beyond all national borders, no less a better appreciation regionally for the invaluable merits of cultural diversity – both today and beyond.
