Engineering the Future: 10th UNESCO Africa Engineering Week
Celebrated across the region each year, UNESCO Africa Engineering Week promotes engineering solutions and awareness among students, society and policy-makers.
This year, the official celebration will take place in Luanda, Angola. It will include the 8th Africa Engineering Conference, the 7th Africa Women Engineers Forum, the Young Engineers Forum and a Business-to-Business (B2B) session. These events will focus on critical issues such as access to safe water, sustainable housing, renewable energy, and climate change challenges.
This 10th edition is hosted by the Ordem dos Engenheiros de Angola, and organised jointly by UNESCO, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and the Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO).
This year’s main themes are:
sustainability and innovative infrastructures;
engineering and acceleration of African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) implementation; and
engineering education and capacity building.
About UNESCO Africa Engineering Week
In 2014, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) together with the Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO) partnered with UNESCO to launch Africa Engineering Week, a platform for the African continent to inspire young people to pursue engineering careers and contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to communicate the importance of engineering to policy-makers, society and the engineering profession.
Since its inception in 2014, UNESCO Africa Engineering Week has been hosted in various African countries including Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Key objectives of the Week:
Promote engineering as a vital field for sustainable development in Africa,
Enhance the visibility and appreciation of engineering achievements across the continent,
Foster collaboration among African countries to address shared engineering and infrastructure challenges, and
Inspire the youth and the public about engineering’s role in solving critical problems.
