Ending Stigma and Discrimination, Breaking the Cycle of Poverty and Marginalization of Persons with Disabilities Project Inception Workshop set for 13-14 July

The inception workshop for the multicounty project on “Ending stigma and discrimination, breaking the cycle of poverty and marginalisation of persons with disabilities will take place virtually from 13-14 July 2021.

Organised by UNESCO and ILO, with support from the United Nations Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD) Multi-Partner Trust Funds (MPTF), the workshop brings together country teams and partners to provide key information and draw strategies for successful project implementation.  Deliberations will contribute towards the elaboration and development of the project work plans.

The project that runs from 2021 to 2023 targets four countries, namely: Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.  It is a Joint UNESCO and ILO Project in partnership with national institutions, Organizations of persons with disabilities, and Governments focusing mainly on fighting prejudice and stereotypes that currently prevent persons with disabilities from accessing skills development and employment opportunities. To this end, the project will develop and test hands-on models and tools that can efficiently help Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions as well as employers and employers’ organizations understand stigma and discrimination patterns and undertake the necessary steps towards more inclusion.

Exchanges of experiences and practices at the regional level will also be at the core of this project. It will focus specifically on TVET institutions and the Employers Organizations, as they represent key entry points for empowerment.

In line with the UNPRPD Strategy, UNESCO and ILO are keen to continue exploring synergies with other UN Agencies on the ongoing programmes on disability inclusion, in order to contribute to achieving the sustainable development goals’ promise of Leaving-No-One-Behind.

The inception workshop will be attended by government officials, social partners, representatives of Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) and programme staff of the two organizations (UNESCO and ILO) in the selected countries (Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe).
