UNESCO and Kampchea Action to Promote Education in Cambodia (KAPE) joined hands to empower persons with disabilities (PwDs) through a series of trainings on Media, Information, and Digital Literacy. Over the course of four sessions, 30 representatives from prominent organizations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) across 19 provinces in Cambodia were equipped with essential skills that will enable them to further educate their communities.
These OPDs now possess the tools to critically analyze and access information, leading to improved lives and enhanced engagement with the media. By harnessing these newfound skills, they can advance their advocacy efforts and actively participate in public debates, especially concerning the rights of persons with disabilities.
One of the participants, Mr. Chhorn Sovandeth, Director of OPDs from Kratie Province, shared his thoughts about the impact of Media, Information, and Digital Literacy on their community. He expressed, "I believe that this capacity building on Media, Information, and Digital Literacy for persons with disabilities is crucial as it brings about positive changes in the lives of OPDs within our communities. It enhances their literacy skills, resilience to misinformation and scams, and enables them to critically evaluate online content. Most importantly, it empowers us to actively participate in society. For example, OPDs now possess the knowledge to register their names online, eliminating the need for unnecessary commutes. Additionally, they can pursue online courses tailored for persons with disabilities, allowing them to study from the comfort of their homes and gain valuable knowledge through the digital space. Undoubtedly, this will significantly improve the livelihoods of persons with disabilities in our community.鈥

This initiative is part of the UN Joint Programme, Accelerating Disability Rights in Cambodia, funded by the United Nations Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD) and co-implemented by UNESCO, UNDP, OHCHR and ILO. This component aimed at equipping organizations of persons with disabilities with the necessary knowledge, resources, and competencies in relation to Media, Information, and Digital Literacy to enable persons with disabilities to better articulate their information needs and maximize the potential of media and new technologies to strengthen their civic participation.
By fostering digital literacy and empowering persons with disabilities to navigate the media landscape, this project is paving the way for a more inclusive and informed Cambodian society.
