Eleven cultural sites from Burkina Faso inscribed on the International List of Cultural Property under Enhanced Protection
On 14 December 2023, the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict inscribed 11 cultural sites from Burkina Faso on the International List of Cultural Property under Enhanced Protection, six of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The newly inscribed sites are the Metallurgical complex of Békuy, the Metallurgical complex of Douroula, the Metallurgical complex of Kindibo, the Metallurgical complex of Tiwêga and the Metallurgical complex of Yamané, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the Royal Court of Tiébélé, the Ruins of Loropéni, the Sanctuary of Notre Dame de Yagma, the National Museum of Burkina Faso, and Sya, the historic centre of Bobo-Dioulasso.
The mechanism reinforces the protection through greater legal immunity, which aims to prevent the inscribed property from being a target of attack or used in support of military actions. The relevance of the Enhanced Protection List has growing in recent years, with the number of protected sites rising from 18 to 55. Among the inscriptions, twelve are located in Africa, contributing to the protection of culture in times of peace as well as in the event of armed conflict.
Burkina Faso received financial assistance from the Fund for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict Fund, established under the . The Fund supported the drafting and adoption of a national plan and the revision of national laws and contributed to developing requests for enhanced protection of the inscribed properties.
