Project
Education for Sustainability in the Brazilian Rainforest
Iracambi is a community of people around the world. Their vision? To see the Brazilian Atlantic forest restored and communities thriving. These citizens are convinced that a lack of knowledge is one of the main drivers of ecosystem destruction, which in the case of the Atlantic Forest is approaching the point of no return. Education, both formal and informal, is at the heart of this project.
Educate and transmit
The Iracambi research centre hosts interns and researchers, and works with local families to restore forest cover on their farms to protect soil and water and combat climate change. Their sustainable education program serves a broad range of people: local schoolchildren, farm families, Brazilian and international students and interns. Since 2021, Iracambi has offered an online program for environmental leaders and educators. It focuses on critical thinking, problem solving, practical field experience and activism. It aims to encourage and equip people of all ages and backgrounds to become agents of change in their communities. “If we raise a new generation of environmental leaders, committed to care for the forests, we all win” says Yasmin Gouveia, Education Coordinator.
Since 2000, the education program has introduced nearly 1,500 schoolchildren to field science, many of whom have gone on to higher education. The research centre has also hosted 2,000 students from Brazil and around the world to work on the challenges of reconciling biodiversity conservation and sustainability. They return to pass on their knowledge to their communities in over 70 countries.
