Educating for peace and the planet
Education for sustainable development (ESD)
Acting as a global advocate and aiming to strengthen capacities of governments to provide quality Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), UNESCO provides policy guidance and technical support to Uzbekistan to develop country ESD strategy and integrated ESD element into curriculum including Climate change education, global citizenship, education for health and well-being.
At government level, UNESCO assists to develop country ESD initiative and working with relevant ministries including Ministry of preschool and school education, Ministry of natural resources etc.
UNESCO developed instructional guides for teachers on global citizenship, media and information literacy, leadership, non-violence and culture of peace to integrate ESD elements into curriculum and classroom application in Uzbek and Russian languages and built capacity of master trainers in three pilot regions; Andijan, Fergana and Namangan in 2021.
Within regional UNESCO research project 鈥淨uality Education for Sustainable Development through ICT Approaches in Central Asia鈥, UNESCO Tashkent Office in partnership with the Avloniy Research Institute developed a 36-hour curriculum and training program 鈥淓ducation for Sustainable Development Goals鈥 and conducted five-day training activities in Kashkadarya region with participation more than 50 teachers in 2022.
UNESCO convened the Sub-regional conference 鈥淧romoting Education for Sustainable Development (ESD): Regional Perspectives and Experiences鈥 which was held in Bishkek on 3-4 November 2022. Uzbekistan delegation and five teachers from Uzbekistan who won UNESCO regional competition on 鈥淏est practices in ESD鈥 participated in this regional meeting.
At school level, UNESCO is uniting schools around the world to take action against waste. Trash Hack campaign draws on the power of schools working together to take action and offers an easy and cheap Trash Hacking activities adaptable for all ages and regional contexts. Trash Hack engage students to trash hack their classrooms, schools, communities and homes. In 2021, Uzbekistan schools participated UNESCO TRASH HACK campaign and shared their own innovative ideas to reduce waste. Within this campaign, in cooperation with Ministry of Natural resources (the State Committee for Ecology and Environment Protection), was organized eco-event, devoted to World Environment Day in the Central Park in Tashkent. School age children gathered and participated clean-up activities; there were waste sorting activities based on whether they are biodegradable or non-biodegradable; and Environmental Drawing Competition among school students on raising environmental education.
Education for health and well-being
At UNESCO, education for health and well-being refers to resilient, health-promoting education systems that integrate school health and well-being as a fundamental part of their daily mission. Only then will our learners be prepared to thrive, to learn and to build healthy, peaceful and sustainable futures for all. UNESCO Tashkent Office jointly with the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) is developing and adapting Social and emotional learning programmes for teachers and youth. Within these learning programmes, UNESCO promotes physical and mental health and well-being of teachers and students, provides information about quality, gender-transformative comprehensive sexuality education that includes HIV, life skills, family and rights as well as contributes to create safe and inclusive learning environments free from all forms of violence, bullying, stigma and discrimination.
