Director-General Participates in the ECOSOC High-Level Segment in New York
From 7 to 11 July, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, will be in New York on the occasion of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) High-Level Segment. The event will be held under the theme 鈥淎ddressing ongoing and emerging challenges for meeting the Millennium Development Goals in 2015 and for sustaining development gains in the future鈥 at the United Nations Headquarters.
Within the framework of the High-Level Segment, the Director-General will chair two Ministerial roundtables organized by UNESCO. The first event will focus on the critical role of the sciences for sustainable development and will be co-chaired by Mrs Edna Molewa, Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs of South Africa; and the second event will be on girls鈥 education and will be co-chaired by the Permanent Representatives of Bangladesh and Denmark to the UN.
The Director-General will also address a Plenary session of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) under the theme 鈥淐harting pathways to the future we want鈥. The HLPF was created at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio +20) and is the main United Nations platform dealing with sustainable development. The Forum provides political leadership and guidance, follows up and review progress in implementing sustainable development commitments, and addresses new and emerging sustainable development challenges.
The Director-General will also participate as a panelist in the ECOSOC Development Cooperation Forum on 11 July session entitled 鈥淭owards a new narrative for development cooperation post-2015鈥.
In the margins of the ECOSOC, the Director-General will join the UN Secretary-General and the Permanent Representatives of Haiti to open a new exhibition entitled 鈥淰ictory over slavery: Haiti and beyond鈥.
While in New York, the Director-General will launch the UNESCO鈥檚 Report 鈥淲orld Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development鈥 and will participate in inter-agency meetings including the .
