Director-General participates in Chief Executives Board briefing on UN response to the Ebola crisis
On 21 November, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, participated in a CEB briefing on the UN system response to the Ebola crisis.
The Secretary-General Senior Coordinator for Ebola, Dr David Nabarro, briefed the Board on the situation on the ground.
The Director-General underlined that an effective Ebola response must go beyond the health intervention. She stressed that the UNESCO will specifically contribute to the efforts towards stopping the epidemic by promoting practices of care, treatment and burials that take into account traditional beliefs and cultural practices; preserving stability by facilitating the flow of credible culturally-appropriate and scientifically-accurate information; ensuring continuity of education services; and assisting countries currently unaffected to prepare for a possible outbreak by putting in place responses mechanisms that can enable a continuity of services in cases the epidemic takes hold.
The Director-General further informed the Board members of some of the activities that are being implemented by UNESCO's field offices, including the 鈥淔ighting Ebola for Media鈥 project in Sierra Leone and Liberia.
After the meeting, the Director-General joined the Secretary-General to brief the press about the UN response to the Ebola outbreak.
The Board then held its Retreat session, which focused on how best the UN system wide system can adapt in order to provide the most efficient and coordinated support to Member States on the transition to the post-2015 development agenda.
