Director-General in New York to Strengthen Education in Conflicts and the Rule of Law

From 20 to 24 May, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, is in New York to take part in the launch of the Guidance Note on attacks against schools and hospitals.

The event, organized by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, Leila Zerrougui, will bring together key speakers, including H.E. Ambassador Sylvie Lucas, Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the United Nations, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director, Yoka Brandt,  and Chair of the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack, Zama Coursen-Neff.

The Director-General will also speak before a meeting with the . At the meeting, hosted by H.E. Mr. Sacha Sergio Llorentty Sol铆z, Permanent Representative of Bolivia to the UN and Chair of the G-77 New York Chapter, the Director-General will present UNESCO鈥檚 vision for Post-2015.

While in New York, the Director-General will also meet with the Permanent Representatives of the UN Global Education First Initiative (GEFI) Champion Countries (Andorra, Australia, Bangladesh, Benin, Brazil, China, Croatia, Denmark, Ethiopia, Guyana, Mozambique, South Africa, Tunisia and United States). The objective of the meeting is to update the Champion Countries on the outcome of 3rd GEFI Steering Committee meeting held in Rome at the beginning of the month.

The Director-General will also attend the annual meeting of the (RoLCRG) where UNESCO is invited for the first time to participate in the work of the group.

Presentations by several high level UN representatives are scheduled, including the Assistant of the Secretary-General for Human Rights heading OHCHR鈥檚 New York Office, Ivan 艩imonovi膰, United Nations Development Programme鈥檚 (UNDP) Administrator, Helen Clark, the Head of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Herv茅 Ladsous, the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, Ibrahim Thiaw and the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Yury Fedotov.
