Director-General Meets the Vice President of Globo Group in Rio de Janeiro

On 21 September, 2015, during her visit Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, met with the Institutional and Editorial Vice President of Globo Group, João Roberto Marinho. The meeting was held at the headquarters of Globo Group.

Thanking Mr Marinho for the 14 years of partnership between Globo and UNESCO through the Criança Esperança project, the Director-General stated that Criança Esperança sets an example to the world, saying that the project is an experience that deserves to be shared worldwide.

"Criança Esperança is in synergy with the world view of the Organization, especially with regard to education, creativity and social inclusion," she affirmed.

The Director-General and the Vice President also discussed various themes within UNESCO’s fields of competence, such as social inclusion, freedom of expression, and the importance of training journalists and their safety. Recalling that 2015 is the 70th anniversary of the creation of UNESCO, the Director-General highlighted that it is also the 30thanniversary of Criança Esperança and the 50th anniversary of TV Globo.

Irina Bokova and João Roberto Marinho were accompanied by the Vice President for Institutional Relations of Globo Group, Paulo Tonet Camargo, the Director of UNESCO in Brazil, Lucien Muñoz, and the Lead Programme Coordinator at UNESCO in Brazil, Marlova Jovchelovitch Noleto. 

In Rio de Janeiro, the Director-General also participated in the opening ceremony of the International Seminar on Culture and Development held within the celebration of the 70th anniversary of UNESCO.  The event is a partnership with the Ministry of Culture in Brazil.
