Director-General meets Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government

On November 2, Irina Bokova met with the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), HE Mr Nechirvan Barzani.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review the political situation currently unfolding in Iraq and the wider region. The Prime Minister evoked the great difficulties that have emerged but also his hope for a better future, provided cooperation is deepened.

The Director-General pledged UNESCO's deep commitment to further cooperation with the Kurdistan Regional Government. She highlighted the example of cooperation for the conservation and nomination of the Erbil Citadel as a model to be replicated in other areas -- in a process driven by the authorities with full UNESCO support. 

The Prime Minister thanked the Director-General and spoke of his strong engagement to deepen cooperation with UNESCO ever more.
