Director-General meets Danish Minister for Trade and development Cooperation
On 5 February, 2015, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, met with the Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation of Denmark, H.E. Mr Mogens Jensen, at UNESCO Headquarters.
The Director-General thanked the Minister for the support of the Government of Denmark to UNESCO 鈥搉otably in areas at the heart of UNESCO competences, including work to promote and protect freedom of expression and to enhance the safety of journalists. She highlighted the important role of Denmark as a Champion Country of the Global Education First Initiative of the UN Secretary-General, steered forward by UNESCO.
The Minister raised the financial situation facing UNESCO and praised the Director-General for her leadership in seeking to reform the Organization. He pledged his support to further such reform to bolster the Organization鈥檚 delivery. The Director-General reviewed the wide range of reform measures undertaken since the 2010 Independent External Evaluation of UNESCO and appealed for the support of the Government of Denmark. The Minister noted the discussions underway to increase support in specific areas of interest.
The meeting closed with a discussion of the powerful role played by HRH Princess Marie, including as patron of the Danish National Commission for UNESCO.
