Director-General Irina Bokova meets with US Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell

On 30 November 2015 鈥 The United States Secretary of the Interior, Ms. Sally Jewell, met with Director-General Irina Bokova, within the framework of the 21st Conference of the Parties, held in Le Bourget, France, from 30 November to 11 December 2015.

Secretary Sally Jewell praised UNESCO鈥檚 work in the field of cultural heritage, in particular and its impact on environmental protection, job creation and tourism. Secretary Jewell  also expressed United States鈥 full support to the Organization referring to key areas in which UNESCO鈥檚 work is resonating closely with her country鈥檚 key concerns and interests, such as education, cultural heritage preservation, and freedom of expression.

Furthermore, Secretary Jewell engaged in a discussion with the Director-General over the 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property, and the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention as she referred to the United States鈥 special interest in finding solutions to the foreign sales of Native American sacred objects.

The Director-General provided Secretary Jewell with an overview of UNESCO鈥檚 current priorities, as well as the Organization鈥檚 activities within the context of the .
