On 19 September, the Director-General, Irina Bokova, will inaugurate a UNESCO Chair in International Education for Development at George Washington University, in Washington DC.

The ceremony will take place in the presence of  Dr Steven Lerman, Provost of George Washington University, the Honourable Crystal Nix-Hines, United States Ambassador to UNESCO, Dr Michael Fueur, Dean of the Graduate School of Education and Human Development, Dr Esther Brimmer, J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Professor of International Relations,  Professor Dan Wagner, UNESCO Chair on Learning and Literacy at the University of Pennsylvania, Professor Mark Brennan, UNESCO Chair for Rural Community, Leadership, and Youth Development at the Pennsylvania State University, Dr James Williams, and Dr Laura C. Engel, Chairholder and Co-Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair in International Education for Development.

The Chair supports a programme of research, outreach, teaching and mentoring of a new generation of educators working on education for global citizenship and social equity and inclusion. The activities of the Chair directly align with UNESCO’s priorities in achieving equitable access to quality education for all.

In Washington, the Director-General will also be advocating for the safeguarding of cultural heritage in times of conflict as essential to lasting peace and sustainable development. In this context, she will take part in an event on 19 September, on the Protection and Preservation of the cultural heritage of Syria and Iraq. The meeting, hosted by the Smithsonian Institution and the US Committee of the Blue Shield, will also mark the 60^th Anniversary of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and present updates on the status of heritage in Syria, Iraq, and Mali.
