Director-General in Geneva to strengthen UNESCO鈥檚 action for Human rights
On 29 February, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, is undertaking a visit to Geneva, Switzerland, to address the high level segment of the 31st regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Irina Bokova is the first UNESCO DG to address the Human Rights Council, which this year celebrates its 10th anniversary.
Irina Bokova will underline the link between the protection of cultural diversity and human rights, as well as the critical importance of human rights for the effective implementation of the newly adopted 2030 UN Agenda for sustainable development.
During her visit to Geneva the Director-General will also meet with M. Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNESCO and the ICRC. The strengthened partnership with ICRC aims at enhancing cooperation to protect cultural heritage at risk during conflict in line with international humanitarian law, in particular the provisions of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict ant its two additional Protocols.
