The Director-General expresses her distress following the second powerful earthquake in Nepal and the rising death toll

Today鈥檚 earthquake occurred less than two weeks after a first devastating earthquake that killed more than 8000 people and caused extensive damage to the country鈥檚 education system and cultural heritage sites.

I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the government and the people of Nepal at this difficult time鈥, said Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO. "Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal and neighboring countries, particularly the families of those killed and injured", she added.
