The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has condemned the killing of Guido Armando Giovanni Villatoro Ramos, a television cameraman in the city of Chicacao, Guatemala.

“I condemn the killing of Guido Armando Giovanni Villatoro Ramos,” the Director-General said. “the commitment of media workers to keeping the public informed is vital for society as a whole. For this reason, I urge the authorities to do all they can to ensure that journalists and media staff can carry out their work safely.”

Guido Armando Giovanni Villatoro Ramos worked for Servicable, a cable television company. He was killed on 13 March.

The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization’s General Conference of 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.” These statements are posted on a dedicated webpage, UNESCO condemns the killing of journalists.
