DeRiA’s Environmental Education Playbook

How can scientific research on climate be made accessible to children aged 7 to 12? This is the challenge of the “Environmental Education Playbook for Educators”, based on multisensory learning.

DeRiA is a group of young and dynamic working professionals from ASEAN that are connected through a common passion: to save our earth from the climate crisis.

To be able to act, these young citizens consider that it is important to make the results of scientific research on the environment accessible to everyone. They are convinced that teachers play a key role and can be catalysts for change. They decided to focus on environmental education.

They developed an Environmental Education Playbook for Educators with lesson plans on climate for primary school students in Malaysia. They introduced elements of gamification and multisensory learning to understand complex scientific concepts.

Environmental lesson plans

This playbook was developed with several stakeholders including three teachers to work on the pedagogical approach. It offers 20 lesson plans based on the environment, with face-to-face and distance learning courses, as well as online resources. Family activities are also encouraged for home education.

This project is sponsored by the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur, in partnership with the UK Science and Innovation Network and the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26).

Initially created for teachers in Malaysia, by December 2021 the project had reached 22 countries, 1,063 teachers and 68,330 students.
