Project
Coral Gardeners
As the coral reefs around his native island of Moorea in French Polynesia gradually disappeared, Titouan realised something had to be done to save the lungs of the ocean and the future of our marine ecosystems. Four years ago, he created Coral Gardeners and has been telling the story of the coral reefs ever since.
Repopulating the reefs with resilient corals
The association has three main missions: to raise awareness, restore and innovate. This means raising awareness about the importance of coral through social media, events and ambassadors. The super coral adoption program – corals that have survived bleaching events in the wild and should hypothetically spawn – is driving awareness while also raising funds.
This also means identifying super corals and growing super coral fragments until they are mature enough to be transplanted back onto the reef – to date, more than 15,000 corals have been replanted. Innovation is also part of this process, using techniques incorporating artificial intelligence with smart sensors to observe and monitor the coral nurseries in real time.
By 2025, Coral Gardeners hope to expand internationally, plant 1 million corals around the world and reach 1 billion people through awareness campaigns and stories.
