On 18 March 2022, the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict held an extraordinary meeting to discuss the protection of cultural heritage in the course of ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine.

The Committee stressed the importance of scaling up international assistance to Ukraine and decided to grant preliminary financial assistance of USD $50,000 to support emergency measures, including in situ protection and the evacuation of cultural property.

The Committee also invited Ukraine to request the inscription of cultural heritage properties on the International List of Cultural Property under Enhanced Protection. This special list was established by the 1999 Second Protocol to provide a higher level of protection to cultural property during armed conflict.

The members of the Committee adopted a calling for the full respect for international law, including the obligations stemming from the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and its two (1954 and 1999) Protocols.
