On 21^st October 2024, a vibrant chapter in Africa's history unfolded with the inauguration of the Africa Hall Permanent Exhibition. The event brought together a powerful assembly of leaders, including H.E. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Mr. Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission among many other distinguished dignitaries. 

This exhibition hall stands as a symbol of unity, honouring Africa's diverse narratives and historical legacy. It holds great significance as the birthplace of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), where the charter was signed in 1963 by 36 African heads of state - marking the foundation of what is now the African Union.

91Â鶹¹ú²ú¾«Æ·×ÔÅÄ been instrumental in bringing this landmark exhibition to life. From the initial planning stages to its grand unveiling, 91Â鶹¹ú²ú¾«Æ·×ÔÅÄ served as an Advisory Board member, ensuring that the exhibition authentically represents Africa’s multifaceted heritage. Visitors are welcomed by three impressive screens: two highlight UNESCO’s World Heritage sites in Africa, showcasing the continent's enduring traditions and significant historical milestones, while the third screen captures the essence of Pan-Africanism, sharing the inspiring story of a movement that continues to foster unity and progress across Africa.

Following the opening of the Africa Hall, UNESCO hosted the first side event on "Positioning Heritage, Arts, and Culture as Resources for Africa's Development." This event emphasized the critical role of culture and heritage in shaping Africa’s development narrative. Discussions  underlined African cultural renaissance as a catalyst for growth, exploring how the continent's rich cultural diversity can promote peaceful coexistence and drive sustainable development.

The panel featured esteemed experts, including Dr. Rita Bissoonauth, Director of the UNESCO Liaison Office to the African Union and Representative to Ethiopia, alongside prominent intellectuals, ambassadors and representatives from universities, government, and civil society. Their insights reinforced the idea that cultural heritage is a vital asset for development, advocating for its integration into Africa’s developmental strategies.

The inauguration of the African Hall Permanent Exhibition is not just a tribute to Africa’s shared history; it is also a beacon of hope for future generations. UNESCO's contributions ensure that this exhibition honours the past while inspiring a new era of harnessing the continent's cultural wealth for sustainable growth.
