Communications volunteer

Aligned with core Nepali development priorities, the UNESCO Office in Kathmandu collaborates within the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework as its primary reference. Across its mandate, the organization supports inclusive and quality education for all, promotes the nation's rich natural and cultural heritage alongside emerging creative industries, mobilizes scientific knowledge for development, advocates for press freedom and freedom of expression, promotes media and information literacy, and addresses hate speech and misinformation. Indigenous communities and Nepali youth, particularly young women and girls, constitute its core constituencies.

DESCRIPTION OF the Volunteer Service

Under the overall authority of the Head of the UNESCO Office in Kathmandu and the direct supervision of Communications officer in the office, the volunteer shall perform various tasks to support the overall communications of the office. 

In particular the volunteer shall

  • Support in producing human interest, success stories, case studies for different past and ongoing projects/programmes
  • Support in writing and editing web content for the UNESCO Kathmandu website
  • Preparation and dissemination of press releases, publications/reports etc
  • Participation in events, production and streamlining of knowledge products in different programme sectors
  • Design and implement different outreach and advocacy materials in consultation with programme units and projects
  • Graphics: social media, banner (event), posters, infographics etc
  • Support in Photography/ videography, editing as needed

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Education: Completion of a bachelor's degree is preferred but pursuing a bachelor's degree in mass communication, journalism or related field can also apply
  • Language skills: Excellent command of English and Nepali
  • Competencies and skills: 
  • Familiarity with various design tools like Canva, Photoshop, and Illustrator, and basic knowledge of video editing (Premiere Pro)
  • Writing Skills: Ability to write creative, clear, concise, and engaging content for various platforms and purposes. 
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds, build relationships, and collaborate effectively within a team.
  • Creativity: Thinking creatively to develop content, engage and prepare communication strategies/plan that capture attention and convey messages effectively.
  • Ability to adapt to new environments and foster positive working relationships with other individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

  • Content creation: Able to produce a meaningful array of graphic and written content
  • Planning and Organizing: Enhanced knowledge and skills to set priorities
  • Reliability: Better understanding and consistency to stick to commitments and complete work timely maintaining consistency.
  • Problem solving : Ability to analyse problems, iand dentify causes and effects. Present possible solutions.

Note

  • Applicants shall be at least 20 years old, and normally not older than 65 years
  • Applicants shall be legally entitled to reside in the country of assignment (Nepal).

Communications and Information Volunteer (Programme)

GENERAL INFORMATION 

Duration: Six months

Location: Nepal

Organizational Unit:  Communication and Information Unit

DESCRIPTION OF the Volunteer Service

Under the supervision of the Programme Officer of Communication and Information (CI) Unit and in overall supervision of the Head of the Office, the volunteer will support the CI unit in developing, planning and implementing activities and projects in Nepal. The incumbent will work within the framework of UNESCO’s Country Strategy (UCS) for Nepal and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) for Nepal. In particular, the volunteer shall:

 

  • Communications support to CI Unit at UNESCO Kathmandu Office. 
  • Support to organise events, workshops and meetings and production and streamlining of knowledge products.
  • Design and implement different outreach and advocacy materials in consultation with programme unit.
  • Support to draft social media contents for – Facebook, twitter, Youtube, Instagram and assist to conduct virtual/hybrid events as well as Facebook live as per need.
  • Draft news stories, press release and other visibility materials.
  • Carry out desk research and support programme to make success stories  
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor and or head of the Office. 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Education: Completion of a bachelor's degree is preferred but pursuing a bachelor's degree in mass communication, journalism or related field under humanities discipline can also apply
  • Subjects: Knowledge of UNESCO’s role on promoting freedom of expression, media development, digital media information and literacy, artificial intelligence, and access to information.
  • Language skills: Excellent command of English and Nepali
  • Competencies and skills: Understanding of the emerging landscape of mass media, digital transformation, use of AI, and ability to work with the multi stakeholder.
