Bogbonli Mosque in Itchan Kala
Uzbekistan is home to more than 2250 architectural monuments of material and spiritual culture that have rare samples of the world heritage. The epigraphy monuments of Khiva ought to be acknowledged unique in the entire Muslim East. The ancient facilities of the town are concentrated in the Inner City 鈥 Itchan Kala and its closest surroundings. Muslim house of worship 鈥 mosque plays important role for millions people in Uzbekistan and abroad. Bogbonli Mosque in Itchan Kala is also one of this place where people gather to pray and find inner peace.
Bogbonli Mosque is located in the southern part of Itchan Kala, World Heritage Property. Mosque was built in XIX century and is almost rectangular in shape. The Mosque is a small complex which consist of the Mosque itself, a small courtyard and two rooms on the entrance part. The avian with two wooden columns dated back to 14th century and originally preserved painted ceiling is attached to the Mosque. All the wooden structure of the Mosque represents the excellent work of the artisans. The Bogbonli Mosque is extremely rich in building inscriptions.
In 2019, the UNESCO launched a project 鈥淪ilk Roads Heritage Corridors in Afghanistan, Central Asia and Iran 鈥 International Dimension of the European Year of Cultural Heritage鈥 funded by the European Union. In the framework of this project, the conservation and adaptation works of Bogbonli Mosque in Itchan Kala have been implemented and the works were completed in 2022. The project aimed to reinforce and stabilize the mosque's structure, preserving its existing wooden elements, as well as adaptation of the Mosque for people with disabilities with the support of local partners and international experts.
The official opening was organized in February 2023 with participation of the Khiva Khokimiyat, Itchan-Kala State Museum-Reserve, Khorezm Department of cultural heritage and Khorezm Mamun Academy. It is also planned to establish a Visitors鈥 Centre in Bogbonli, where people can get more information about the role of Khiva in the Silk Road. Furthermore, the building can be used as a training center for young conservation specialists where they can get theoretical knowledge and practice gained skills on site.
