Awareness-raising workshop for the international art market and museums on fighting illicit trafficking of Afghan cultural property

The UNESCO 1970 Convention provides an international framework for the prevention of theft and looting and the return and restitution of stolen cultural property.
Illicit trafficking robs people of their culture, identity and history, and stolen cultural property is often transferred either through illicit markets worldwide or through licit markets such as auctions, including through the Internet.
People, governments, the art-market and institutions can do their part to fight this by raising awareness, being informed and ethical when buying and selling art and cultural objects, enacting and respecting laws, and protecting cultural heritage and property.
In line with the Organization’s , this workshop aims to foster dialogue, international cooperation and a coordinated effort between intergovernmental entities, Member States and all actors involved in the fight against illicit trafficking of Afghan cultural heritage.
The primary objective of the workshop is to raise awareness on precautionary measures, discuss the challenges of provenance research and encourage the sharing of knowledge and best practices. Additionally, the workshop will provide cultural property dealers with technical training to help them combat this scourge.
