Artists at risk: Learning from the experience of journalists | UNESCO publication launch and announcement of the recipients of the UNESCO-Aschberg programme call for projects
In the framework of the 9th World Summit on Arts & Culture organized by the International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies (IFACCA), UNESCO will launch the publication Defending Creative Voices: Artists in emergencies – Learning from the safety of journalists, as well as announce the selected recipients of upcoming UNESCO-Aschberg programme support towards the enhancement of artistic freedom.
Based on a comparative analysis, the Defending Creative Voices report aims to strengthen the protection of artists and cultural professionals during emergencies by drawing lessons from the experience, challenges, and achievements in the field of journalists’ safety. It presents actionable recommendations and identifies areas in which synergies between key stakeholders promoting, respectively, artistic and media freedom could serve to reinforce the protection of both at-risk artists and journalists. The Defending Creative Voices study has been produced by UNESCO’s Culture and Communication and Information Sectors, with the support of the UNESCO-Aschberg programme for artists and cultural professionals (which is currently funded by the Kingdom of Norway) and the UNESCO Multi-Donor Programme on Freedom of Expression and Safety of journalists.
Recognizing the urgent need to enhance the protection of artists worldwide, UNESCO is upscaling its support to artistic freedom and the status of the artist, through the UNESCO-Aschberg Programme for artists and cultural professionals. During the session, UNESCO will announce the projects – to be led by governments and civil society organizations – that have been selected for financing under the programme in the context of a call for projects launched in December 2022.
