Living Tradition | Exhibition and Guide to Exceptional Roots Music in Serbia
The project "Exhibition and Guide - Living Tradition – Exceptional Musical Heritage Of Serbia” was implemented with the support of The Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia.
The List of Elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Serbia established by the National Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage of Serbia currently includes 49 items (May 2020). The list was made in line with requirements of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage passed in 2003 and ratified by the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia in 2010.
This project, involving an exhibition with a guide, presents eight elements of the musical heritage of Serbia included in the List, that are of exceptional value for the culture of Serbia and the mankind. These are examples of the living vocal, vocal-instrumental and instrumental rural and urban musical traditions from various parts of Serbia. They are forms of musical expression the characteristics of which fit in with broader cultural and musical physiognomy of the area in which they are found. On the other, they are highly specific, even endemic, and therefore regarded as „trademark” forms for certain parts of Serbia (and thus for the country as a whole). Inclusion of these items in the national list confirms their value within the context of world folk music heritage.
The First ‘Anti-Colonial Museum’ in Europe
Grounded in the Non-Aligned ideology, the Museum of African Art (MAA) was conceptualized as the first and only ‘anti-colonial museum’ in the region of South-East Europe entirely dedicated to the cultures and arts of the African continent.
Since its opening in 1977, the MAA has organized topical, collections–based exhibitions, as well as art show presenting the works of contemporary African and Afro-European artists. Currently, the MAA is dedicatedly working on allocating and assuming responsibility by re-evaluating, re-investigating, re-questioning and re-building its position and role in light of global changes to museum policies and representations.
Upcoming work at the MAA involves working on paradigm-shifting transformations and “decolonizing” minds (not just its physical remembrance structures), thus generating momentum for creating a true ‘anti-colonial museum’.
Museum of African Art in Belgrade in collaboration with Color Media Communications organized online conference “Contemporary Art of Africa in the Era of the Pandemic”. It was streamed on 25 May 2021 in order to celebrate The Africa Day. The subject of the conference is dedicated to the question how the Covid-19 pandemic affected cultural institutions, the work of contemporary artists of African descent and those working on the African continent, as well as to the themes, processes, contents, forms and shapes in the field of contemporary art that this pandemic gas brought to the fore.
The Afro Festival is one of the most important events of the Museum of African Art. Established in 1997, it has in time become known as the only Festival in the country and the wider region that promotes the rich cultural heritage and inexhaustible creativity of the African continent.
In addition to traditional museum contents such as exhibitions and public guided tours, the Afro festival also offers an array of lectures and talks, concerts and travel programs, as well as music, dance and art workshops for children.
With the participation of African embassies in Belgrade, in the pleasant garden of the Museum, this day celebrates African music, dance, crafts, art and culture. The embassies of Algeria, Angola, Guinea, Egypt, Congo, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and the consulate of Namibia are participants in this year's festival.
