Restoring Mosul's rich and diverse heritage, and supporting the reconciliation of communities

With the support of the United Arab Emirates, UNESCO embarked on a major project to rehabilitate landmark cultural and religious sites, including Al-Nouri Mosque, Al-Hadba Minaret, Our Lady of the Hour Convent and Al-Tahera Church. Reconstruction was completed in January 2025 in cooperation with the Iraqi Government and people.

With the support of the European Union, UNESCO also reconstructed houses and schools in the Old City of Mosul and Basra. By the end of 2024, 124 heritage houses and 31 schools—a total of 404 classrooms—had been rehabilitated.

With the support of Germany, the work of preserving and cataloging the original architectural elements had been completed in January 2022, but the full restoration required additional funds.
