Make the world more just and inclusive

UNESCO supports people in understanding each other and working together to build lasting peace, and fights against racism, discrimination and hate speech for just, inclusive, resilient and democratic societies. It defends and promotes freedom of expression, media independence and pluralism. UNESCO enhances the protection and promotion of cultural heritage, and supports creativity and dynamic cultural sectors. Below are some examples of partnerships and programmes which support this strategic objective:
Global Youth Grant Scheme (GYGS)
GYGS aims to invest in youth potential by supporting youth-led research and innovative actions. A pilot project for Latin America, financed by Nestlé, provide grants, capacity-development and mentoring to youth teams to implement projects with social impact.
Initiative for Enabling Intercultural Dialogue
In partnership with the Institute for Economics and Peace, the Initiative for Enabling Intercultural Dialogue has established the world’s first comprehensive framework on the structures, values and processes that enable intercultural dialogue to be an effective tool for peace and inclusion including data for over 160 Member States with partners such as ILO, UNFPA, PAHO and Harvard University.
Transforming MEN’talities
The Transforming MEN’talities Initiative is developing research on positive masculinities and how to promote them, which informs capacity-building and advocacy activities, in partnership with Equimundo, MenEngage Alliance, Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI), and White Ribbon. Pilot projects are implemented at the national levels in India, Kenya, and Morocco, inter alia.
Silk Roads Programme
The , a UNESCO initiative launched in 1988, promotes dialogue and understanding of how cultures and societies interact and enrich one another. UNESCO fosters intercultural dialogue through initiatives including the "Youth Eyes on the Silk Roads" Photo Contest, Silk Roads Youth Research Grant, and a series of thematic publications on historical exchanges along the Silk Roads.
Actions against Racism and Discrimination
As a flagship initiative of the Roadmap against Racism and Discrimination, the annual Global Forum serves as a unique international platform where multiple stakeholders champion effective strategies and initiatives and build partnerships to establish sustainable solutions. The Master Class Series initiative aims to empower students to become youth champions.
Safety of Scientists
UNESCO and the Kingdom of the Netherlands have joined hands in 2023 to strengthen the implementation of the Recommendation on Science and Scientific Researchers (2017), with particular emphasis on freedom and safety of scientists.
The MOST - Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Partnership
Five-year partnership to promote Arabic as a language in UNESCO, promote Arabic as language for social cohesion, showcase the role and legacy of the Arabic language along the silk roads and celebrate World Arabic Language Day among others.
International Coalition of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities
was launched by UNESCO in 2004 to assist local authorities in combating discrimination in their capacity as policy makers and service providers in areas as diverse as education, employment, housing provision and cultural activities.
UNESCO Creative Cities Network
This was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development.
The Global Media Defence Fund
This Fund is a multi-partner trust fund supporting not-for-profit organizations from all around the globe in the implementation of local, regional, and global projects that seek to bolster journalists’ legal protection and/or enhance media freedom through relevant investigative journalism and/or strategic litigation.
The Multi-Donor Programme on Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists (MDP)
MDP seeks to strengthen UNESCO’s work by channeling funds towards emerging priorities and the most pressing needs to achieve its mandate on freedom of expression, media development, and media and information literacy.
The International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC)
Created in 1980, it is the only multilateral forum within the UN system designed to mobilize the international community around media development issues. It is composed of 39 Member States elected by the UNESCO General Conference and meets officially once every two years. It acts as laboratory for ideas on emerging and pressing media policy issues and it gives seed funding to grassroots and local actors tackling the media issues of the 21st century on the ground.
Information For All Programme (IFAP)
IFAP is a unique UNESCO intergovernmental programme that supports Member States in fostering equitable societies through promoting universal access to information and knowledge for sustainable development.
The Memory of the World Programme
This programme aims to: facilitate the preservation of the world's documentary heritage, particularly in areas affected by conflict and/or natural disaster; enable universal access to documentary heritage worldwide; and enhance public awareness about the significance of documentary heritage.
