The Jose M. Pichi Meisegeir, S.J. Collection.Carlos Francisco Mugica Archive, 1967-1983
This documentary holding represents a crucial part of the history of Argentina. It is unique and representative of an era (1967-1983) that bears witness to a history of human rights and freedom violations, ideological, political and religious persecution, lived simultaneously in several Latin American countries.
The collection includes original documents, manuscripts, pamphlets, flyers, posters, photographs and videos. It is complemented by writings published on the subject from 1967 to 2010. The main content is comprised of two parts: a) the Carlos Francisco Mugica Archive, an Argentine priest (born in 1930) who carried out his pastoral activity in slums and with humanitarian groups. He was the most representative advocate of the Movement of Priests for the Third World (MSTM). With his unorthodox style, his humor, his ability to communicate in public, his dedication to the poor and his courage, he achieved the sympathy of many and provoked the irritation of the powerful. He was assassinated in 1974. His death was controversial, becoming the symbol of a generation: the first martyr of the MSTM. Mugica became a point of reference for a crucial stage in Argentine history; and b) the Movement of Priests for the Third World (MSTM) Archive, and other related and subsequent topics. This movement of priests was related to lay groups. These lay groups, in turn, influenced or supported by the MSTM, established links with groups of aboriginals, populations of the slums and rural areas, giving rise to initiatives of social and political movements, or movements related to sectors of armed struggle. This documentary heritage is valuable for students of state terrorism, repressive, subversive and human rights violation processes in Argentina in particular, and Latin America in general.
