HerAtlas: Monitoring the right to education for girls and women

Education is a human right, so why are more than 122 million girls out of school around the world?

HerAtlas serves as an interactive world map, employing a color-coded scoring system to monitor 12 key indicators of legal progress toward gender equality in education. From constitutional guarantees of education without sex-based discrimination to setting a minimum marriage age of 18, the tool scrutinizes important legal aspects. HerAtlas simplifies complex legal language, making it accessible across diverse contexts and enhancing public awareness of the unalienable right to education for every individual. Recognizing the frequent divide between rules, their implementation, and real-world impact, this tool weaves in key quantitative data alongside certain indicators to provide perspective on the rule of law and reality.

Regular updates are being undertaken up to 2030 to showcase legal reforms.

Key data on girls and women’s right to education

Many girls and women cannot exercise their right to education due to gender inequality and discriminatory practices. Poverty, early marriage, and gender-based violence are just some of the reasons behind the high percentage of out-of-school and illiterate girls and women globally.
