International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage

International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage

17 October

Intangible cultural heritage, also called living heritage, takes multiple forms in our everyday life. Our dances, stories, interactions with the universe, craftsmanship, sports, foodways, arts, traditions, and festivities… These are all reflections of the generations that came before us, and the essence of who we are today.

Living heritage is a powerful expression of our cultural diversity. In an increasingly globalized world, where cultures and traditions are at risk of becoming homogenized, celebrating and safeguarding living heritage is essential. It reminds us of the beauty in our differences and the strength in our shared humanity. Through education, collaboration, and awareness, we can ensure that these traditions remain vibrant and meaningful for the future. By fostering mutual understanding and cooperation among communities and societies, living heritage has the power to build peace and tolerance.

To raise awareness on its vital importance for our humanity and the need to safeguard it for future generations, the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is celebrated every 17 October around the world. The International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage was proclaimed by the 42nd session of the General Conference in November 2023 ().

Living heritage reflects  the  richness of our cultures and the deep connection we share with our ancestors, while also serving  as  a  driving  force  for  the  future.   It  is  an  essential  factor  for  quality  education,  social cohesion and economic development
