UNESCO AI Policy Roadmap – Virtual Stakeholder Sessions

Background
Artificial Intelligence (AI) changes economies, industries, and societies worldwide. Understanding its transformative potential, UNESCO ensures that AI developments align with human rights, sustainability, and inclusivity. Ongoing efforts cover AI ethics, education, gender equality, and building capacity for governments and the judiciary.
One of UNESCO’s major initiatives is the adopted in 2021. It sets a global standard for AI ethics, acting as a guide to protect human rights while promoting AI benefits and minimizing its risks, particularly regarding critical issues like transparency, accountability, and privacy.
It encourages organizations, companies, and individuals developing or using AI to do so ethically and according with human rights. In 2024, the UNESCO Office for the Caribbean released the Caribbean Artificial Intelligence Policy Roadmap, providing a tailored and human-centered approach to integrating and regulating AI in the region.
The roadmap, built on four pillars—Culture and Creativity, Governance and Transformation, Upskilling and Education, and Resiliency and Sustainability—emphasizes preserving Caribbean cultural identity, promoting safe AI use, enhancing workforce education, and leveraging AI for sustainable development in the digital age.
As the region faces AI opportunities but also challenges, the UNESCO Office for the Caribbean is facilitating discussions to ensure that diverse voices are heard and informed on the essential elements of the Caribbean AI Roadmap, promoting inclusive and responsible adoption throughout the region.
Online discussions focused on shaping the AI Policy and Ethics Roadmap for the Caribbean have been organized, aiming to provide an interactive platform for stakeholders across industry, civil society, and intergovernmental organizations to engage in meaningful dialogue on AI governance, opportunities, and challenges in the region.
