Role of oceans, culture and UNESCO sites discussed at PreCOP25
San Jos茅, Costa Rica. 7 Oct 2019. In the framework of the PreCOP25, UNESCO contributes to five events to promote the role science, culture and education, with emphasis on the role of oceans, coastal environments community-based management and nature based solutions as innovative ways of climate action:
The nexus of climate change and oceans in the 2030 Agenda (8 October, 1:30-4:30 pm): The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO), in collaboration with the Vice Ministry of Oceans and Water of Costa Rica, will emphasise the value chain from ocean observations and research to policy and societal implications of the ocean carbon cycle, considering different climate change scenarios. The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 will be highlighted as an opportunity for transformative action and a contribution to reverse the negative impacts of anthropogenic activities on the health of the ocean, its ecosystems and services.
Cities and Sustainable Mobility with a focus on Culture, Gender, Equity and Inclusion in local contexts (9 October, 8:00-9:30 am): UNESCO will share experiences from the Creative Cities of Kingston, Mexico and Medellin, which harness the potential of culture and creativity in view of fostering sustainable cities. This event is organized together with the NGOs Green Building Council Costa Rica and the 5C Citizen Advisory Council on Climate Change.
Adaptation of coastal zones to Climate Change: Inputs to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities (9 October, 1:30-15:00 pm): UNESCO will present the project 鈥淭sunami-Ready Communities in Central America鈥, which aims at strengthening capacities of local communities in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Guatemala for disaster risk reduction. The event is organized along with the MarViva Foundation, the National University of Costa Rica, the KETO Foundation and the 5C Citizen Advisory Council on Climate Change.
Oceans Science and Climate Change in a developing country (9 October, 9:45-11:00 am): The role of IOC-UNESCO in promoting and coordinating research, services, capacity development, and transfer of technology for the improved management, sustainable development and protection of ocean, is instrumental to the ability of all States, specially Developing States, to properly address the challenges stemming from climate change. UNESCO will share its vision, actions and initiatives during this event. UNESCO-IOC participate in the event in collaboration with the Vice Ministry of Oceans and Water of Costa Rica.
UNESCO Designated Sites for Advancing Interdisciplinary Climate Knowledge and Action (10 October, 8:00-9:30 am): UNESCO-designated sites, including World Heritage sites, UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and UNESCO Global Geoparks, provide useful platforms to apply and test climate monitoring, mitigation and adaptation. They also help to raise awareness of climate change impacts on human societies, cultural diversity, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and the world鈥檚 natural and cultural heritage. Communities in these areas are working on innovative ways to address climate change. UNESCO will be presenting experiences from UNESCO sites around the world. The National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) of Costa Rica is co-organiser of this event.
PreCOP25 is an international conference, taking place in San Jose, Costa Rica, from 8 to 10 October 2019, in preparation of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP25), which will be held in Chile in December 2019. The recommendations of the PreCOP25 are expected to feed into the discussions and negotiations during the COP25. The PreCOP will include a public Forum to share experiences and good practices on climate change adaptation and mitigation. See the full Programme of PreCOP25 .
