Ending all forms of violence against women and girls in and through sport is a global priority for UNESCO's sport flagship, Fit for Life. To advance gender equality and upend discrimination, Fit for Life focuses on five action areas: (1) data, research and impact measurement, (2) inclusive and participatory policy-making, (3) safeguarding and reporting, (4) education and capacity-building, (5) advocacy and communications.

UNESCO and UN Women's Handbook on Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls in Sport, supported by the UN Spotlight Initiative, fits directly into this frame. The Handbook, launched during UNESCO's 7th Global Sports Ministers Conference (MINEPS VII), aims at equipping policy-makers and practitioners with strategies and resources to tackle gender-based violence effectively.

To support the implementation of the Handbook, UNESCO will host a Fit for Life Policy Roundtable on 5 April 2024 in connection with the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. Representatives from government and the world of sport will join UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences, Gabriela Ramos, to discuss concrete ways to develop survivor-centred policies, processes and programmes.

Taking place in the context of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, this event will begin a cascade of activities on gender equality and tackling gender-based violence. A social media campaign, entitled “Change the Game”, will promote male allyship in the fight against gender-based violence in sport and in society. Fit for Life is also organizing a “Global Sports Conference” to be hosted at UNESCO.

This multi-stakeholder event will include a planned session on gender equality to be hosted at UNESCO on 24 July 2024 around the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Conference will feature the launch of our Sport and Gender Equality Game Plan, a new resource that will offer practical assistance in crafting and executing inclusive sports policies and programmes that promote gender equality and tackle gender-based violence.
