Mexico strengthens Acapulco and Coyuca cultural revival after Hurricane Otis through UNESCO's Heritage Emergency Fund

Mexico City, May 9, 2024.- Through the UNESCO Heritage Emergency Fund, the federal Secretariat of Culture, UNESCO, and the Guerrero Secretariat of Culture will grant financial support to proposals from workshop leaders, cultural managers, artists, and collectives, as well as independent cultural spaces in Acapulco and Coyuca de BenÃtez that require repair or recovery.
The initiative is part of UNESCO's program to support the educational, cultural, and social recovery of Guerrero, in Mexico, following the impact of Hurricane Otis in October 2023, and accelerate its economic revival. The call contains two categories.
The first category will grant 15 financial support of 20,000 pesos for the implementation of artistic, cultural, and prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse workshops for children and adolescents affected by Hurricane Otis, with priority given to community and group work.
The second category will grant support of 40,500 pesos to independent scenic spaces (with 30 to 50 people of capacity) through the recognition of the best creative and artistic projects, especially those requiring restoration or recovery of their scenic supplies or costumes and others. Six projects will be awarded and should develop seven free shows with a minimum of 80% declared capacity.

This calling is possible thanks to the UNESCO Heritage Emergency Fund and its donors: the Qatar Fund for Development, the Government of Canada, the Kingdom of Norway, the French Republic, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Principality of Monaco, the Republic of Estonia, ANA Holdings INC, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Slovak Republic, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Principality of Andorra, and the Republic of Serbia.
Acapulco has an extensive cultural landscape with historical, architectural, artistic, urban, natural and living heritage. Examples include the Fort of San Diego, the Cathedral of Acapulco, La Quebrada and its cliff divers, the Oviedo Hotel and the CROM Building (Stevedores Building), the SinfonÃa del Mar (Ocean Symphony) Amphitheater, and the Fishermen's Promenade, among others.
Acapulco is also a site of historical memory, as it was where the famous Manila Galleon, the China's Nao, arrived and departed connecting Asia with the world through America for over 200 years. Acapulco is a city where, at least, are spoken four indigenous languages: Nawatlahtolli (Nahuatl), Ñomndaa (Amuzgo), Tu'un Savi (Mixtec), and Meꞌphaa (Tlapaneco). It has a significant presence of Afro-descendants and manifests a wide diversity of cultural expressions covering all disciplines and artistic fields.
