To commemorate the important role Radio plays in our everyday lives, the United Nations General Assembly declared 13th February as the World Radio Day. A day to celebrate radio as a medium of communication, to improve international cooperation between broadcasters and to encourage major networks and communities alike to promote access to information, freedom of expression and gender equality over the airwaves.

To celebrate this day in South Sudan, stakeholders including UNESCO, radio stations, the Journalists Union of South Sudan, AMDISS among others agreed to host a 4 hour joint Outside Broadcasting event on 13 February 2016 from 10:00 to 13:00 at Rainbow Play Ground in Juba. 

This joint event will bring together the radio broadcasting sector including SSTV, EBC, Radios under Catholic Radio Network, Eye Radio, Radio Miraya, Classic, Summer Radio, Radio 1, Liberty, Capital FM, City FM, and VOA among others.  The stations will jointly broadcast messages related to radio in Disasters and Emergencies situations and more so on peace and reconciliation. The local theme chosen for the day is "Celebrating Radio in Peace and Conflict." This is done to ensure that the public, private and community radios in South Sudan share the same platform to advocate for the right use of Radio in South Sudan in ending the conflict, promote peace building initiatives and reconciliation. It will also be a platform for promoting diversity as strength, through local languages advocating for the same message.  

The event is expected to be officiated by Hon. Michael Makuei Lueth, Minister Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and it will bring development and humanitarian organizations active in the field of disaster preparedness and response.

Among the dignitaries invited are Mr. Eugene Owusu, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General as well as the UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative to South Sudan and UNESCO Representative to South Sudan Mr. Salah Khaled.Other activities supported by UNESCO and leading to the day are, serial radio talk shows, jingles with the same message on the role of radio to be played from today the 1st Of February to 13th February 2016, in all Radio stations in Juba. A joint conference by all the station managers will also be taking place on the 10th February to raise the awareness on the need to utilize the airwaves responsibly in South Sudan in times of peace and conflict.
