Empowering girls through the provision of science laboratory equipment in Pakistan

"I always enjoyed knowing about science, but now I can actually see and do the experiments myself. It makes learning so much more interesting and fun!" - Fatima

In a significant move towards educational equity and empowerment, UNESCO Islamabad Office has equipped girls' lower secondary schools in districts of Muzaffargarh in South Punjab, Tharparkar in Sindh and Swat, Mohmand, and Kohistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with essential science laboratory equipment. This initiative aims to transform science education by providing young girls with tools for hands-on practice, fostering a deeper understanding of scientific concepts.

For years, schools in remotest areas of Pakistan have lacked basic laboratory equipment, particularly affecting girl students and limiting their exposure to practical learning. Without the means to conduct experiments, these students relied solely on theoretical knowledge, putting them at a disadvantage.

Recognizing the need for practical science education, UNESCO Islamabad Office provided laboratory equipment, including models of the human digestive and respiratory systems, beakers, test tubes, and other essential tools. These resources enable students to conduct experiments, observe phenomena, and engage directly with scientific principles. Hands-on experience is crucial for nurturing curiosity, enhancing understanding, and building confidence in science subjects.

The impact of this initiative extends beyond better-equipped science classes. By enabling girls to participate in practical science activities, UNESCO Islamabad Office helps break down barriers that have hindered girls' education in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. This support fosters an environment where girls can thrive academically and develop a passion for science, potentially leading to future careers in these fields.

One student, Fatima from Swat, expressed her excitement: "I always enjoyed knowing about science, but now I can actually see and do the experiments myself. It makes learning so much more interesting and fun!"

This initiative promotes gender equality and empowers young girls through education. By ensuring girls have the same opportunities as boys to engage with and excel in science, UNESCO Islamabad Office contributes to a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape.

Dr. Shamim Akhtar, District Education Officer in Swat, highlighted the broader implications: "Access to laboratory equipment is a game-changer for our students. It levels the playing field and gives our girls the chance to pursue their interests in science without being held back by a lack of resources."

The provision of science laboratory equipment to schools is a transformative step towards empowering young girls and promoting educational equity in marginalized areas of Pakistan. By bridging the resource gap, this initiative ensures all students, regardless of gender, can explore, experiment, and excel in the sciences, paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future.

This initiative is funded under the Girls’ Lower Secondary Education Programme (GLSEP) by the Norwegian Ministry of foreign Affairs in Pakistan
