Collective Healing Initiative

Furthermore, groundbreaking scientific research has underlined the transgenerational nature of traumatic stress, directly linking the wounds of the past with the present. This history is echoed across the globe through other examples of mass atrocity, including the genocide and violent displacement of indigenous peoples, highlighting the global need for collective healing, social justice and the creation of systemic conditions for the well-being of all.
Through the Routes of Enslaved Peoples programme, 91鶹Ʒ been working since 2018 with the Guerrand-Hermès Foundation for Peace and the Global Humanity for Peace Institute to develop a ground-breaking Collective Healing Initiative. The Initiative aims at addressing the psycho-social, economic and political consequences of the transatlantic trade and enslavement of African peoples and other histories of mass atrocity, as well as creating pathways towards personal, cultural, relational and institutional transformation.

Under the guidance of an international advisory board of multi-disciplinary experts, the key activities of the Collective Healing Initiative have included:
Development of a , mapping existing impactful practices of collective healing.
Facilitating community-rooted Intergenerational Dialogue and Inquiry processes in affected communities across four continents (UK, Nigeria, Kenya, USA and Colombia) to support collective healing, capacity-building and youth leadership development.
Development of a exploring emergent practices, new perspectives and challenges and opportunities for collective healing, social justice and global wellbeing featuring internationally renowned experts and the voices of impacted communities.
Development of a Collective Healing published in 2024 and launched at the 30th anniversary of the Routes of Enslaved Peoples Programme.
Building the capacity of international facilitators to design and host bespoke Collective Healing Circles in their communities which provide open, courageous and caring spaces for nurturing social justice and holistic wellbeing.
Organising collective healing workshops for youth in partnership with the European Commission, which support young people to deepen their understanding of dehumanising histories, transcend cultural boundaries and engage in transformative action in their local communities.
The Collective Healing Initiative is currently supporting youth-led research into reconceptualising youth leadership and changemaking within a healing justice lens, with a view to ultimately developing an accredited UNESCO youth academy. Over the next year, the initiative and its community partners will develop a policy brief for collective healing, social justice and global wellbeing based upon the multidisciplinary research and practice that the initiative has supported since 2018.
