Chile: Arts Education Week 2023 – "Creating Collective Universes"

Arts Education Week (SEA) is an international initiative led by UNESCO, to which Chile has been a participant since 2013. Its aim is to raise awareness of the importance of arts education and to promote cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue, and social cohesion. In Chile, the event is jointly organised by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, the Ministry of Education, the Regional Bureau for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC/UNESCO Santiago), Balmaceda Arte Joven, the University of Chile, and the Foundation for Youth and Children's Orchestras (FOJI).

Every year in May, a series of activities are organised across the country to reaffirm the importance of artistic practices and education through the arts. These activities take place not only in schools but also in various educational settings, such as early childhood education, higher education, cultural centres, libraries, museums, theatres, and community spaces, among others. Additionally, Arts Education Week (SEA) fosters collaborative partnerships among different stakeholders within Chile’s arts education ecosystem, encouraging the development of projects and experiences that expand the educational space beyond the classroom while ensuring cultural relevance.

In 2023, SEA is dedicated to the memory of the renowned Chilean musician and educator Jorge Peña Hen (1928–1973), a creator of collective universes. On 18 May 1964, he founded Chile’s first children’s orchestra in La Serena. His work laid the foundation for the development of children's and youth orchestras and choirs in Chile and across Latin America.

SEA 2023: Creating Collective Universes

For its eleventh edition, Arts Education Week adopts the theme: "Creating Collective Universes." The aim is to invite various communities to engage in creation, reflection, and coexistence through artistic practices, as well as to contribute ideas, games, and shared exercises in response to the challenges of the contemporary world.

Communities can take part by organising activities during the week or by developing a longer-term project.
