Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, Petra has captivated the world with its stunning rock-cut architecture, including the iconic Treasury, Monastery and Royal Tombs. However, the site has faced numerous challenges, such as erosion, tourism pressure, and the need for extensive restoration and preservation efforts. 

Over the past decade, the collaborative efforts between UNESCO and the Government of Italy through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) in Petra have showcased the remarkable potential of international partnerships in preserving and promoting cultural heritage. Since 2011, this dynamic collaboration has yielded significant results, reaffirming the importance of safeguarding one of the world's most renowned archaeological sites. 

This long-standing collaboration has allowed for the successful implementation of several projects, through technical expertise and support to the local authorities, capacity building programs for local youth, documentation and research, community engagement, and it has resulted in significant achievements such as:  

• Improved safety of the site; 
• Enhanced structural stability and preservation of key monuments, including the Siq and the Palace Tomb;  
• Empowerment of local communities through their direct involvement in the conservation effort; 
• Betterment of the overall visitor experience through the establishment of new visitor trails and information panels.  

The partnership between UNESCO and the Italian Government in Petra stands as a testament to the importance of international cooperation in safeguarding our shared cultural heritage. This collaboration has not only helped in preserving Petra but has also contributed to the sustainable future of the site. As we celebrate the achievements of the past decade, we look forward to continued efforts to protect and promote this extraordinary archaeological wonder for generations to come.
