Assessing open access with the Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative
The Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative (COKI) Open Access Dashboard measures open access performance for 225 countries and over 50,000 organizations, updated monthly. The dashboard[1] includes countries having at least five research outputs and organizations with at least 50 research outputs. The website is populated from the Open Access Dataset[2], created with the COKI Academic Observatory data collection pipeline[3], which fetches data about research publications from multiple sources, synthesizes the datasets and creates the open access calculations for each country and institution.
A key feature of COKI is the open sharing of the underlying data and tools. The open source code for the Open Access Dashboard is available. The COKI Open Access Dataset is available in JSON Lines format with individual countries and institutions available as CSV datafiles.
Although driven by one of the most comprehensive and inclusive output datasets available, like any dataset, not all research outputs are covered. Research outputs with a Crossref digital object identifier (DOI) are included. Despite containing over 150 million outputs, a significant proportion of contributions to the scholarly record is not currently covered by this identifier system. There are also limitations in the coverage of affiliation data linking outputs to institutions (and then to countries). Specifically, smaller and less prestigious institutions tend to be less visible. This is true of any dataset and the COKI team is interested in working with others to improve these data over time.
COKI is a strategic initiative of the Research Office at Curtin University, the Faculty of Humanities, School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry and the Curtin Institute for Data Science.
