IDRIC’s Video Showcase of Women Role Models in STEM

Cross-Cutting Themes

As part of its wider EDI work led by Professor Dame Heather McGregor, the Industrial Decarbonization Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC) has developed an inclusive, participatory audiovisual role model intervention that aims to give equitable access to STEM role models for underrepresented young people. In total a suite of 48 films has been produced to: challenge stereotypes of scientists and science, widen the breadth and relevance of role models, increase accessibility to relatable role models, reduce the burden placed on role models, provide support for teaching and teachers, promote inclusive communication and knowledge sharing about energy transition in the context of society, and more widely raise awareness of the importance of firmly embedding equity, diversity and inclusion across STEM / the energy transition sector.

In developing its inclusive methodology, IDRIC has prioritized respectfully listening to, learning from, and being led by lived experience of marginalization. This approach is critical to both supporting role models and to authentic knowledge production. Robust consideration of audience needs also underpins IDRIC’s collaborative ethos.
